As the new fall television season gets underway, there has been no shortage of sensationalism. The Queen of all talk Oprah Winfrey set the bar pretty high with a two day interview with Comeback Diva Whitney Houston. It was Lady O’s September 23rd show with One Day at a Time child star Mackenzie Phillips that has everyone raising both eyebrows in shock. Just in case you’ve only heard tidbits, here’s the scoop:
Mackenzie wrote a tell-all book “High on Arrival” in which she claims for ten years she had a consensual sexual relationship with her late father, John Phillips of the 60’s group The Mama’s and the Papa’s. Keep in mind – both were consistently high on cocaine, marijuana, alcohol and heroin. (No excuse, but important nonetheless) Oprah asked Mac what she was going to do when people came out of the closet refuting her story, claiming her book was defaming her late father. On Friday’s show Mac’s step-sister Chynna Phillips sat in Oprah’s chair to support her sister saying that Mackenzie had told her about the sexual relationship but she had concerns about its effect upon the family.
My thoughts are simple. Why would someone come out and say they had a ten year sexual relationship with their father if it hadn’t happened? That would be pretty twisted. Step-mother Michelle Phillips gave a written statement to Oprah’s producers saying that Mackenzie has always had mental problems. Sister Chynna denied any mental illness stating, “Mac had no mental illness. Mac was a drug addict. My mother is in denial.” Another daughter of one of the Mama’s and the Papa’s members also gave a statement saying that her father was aware of the sexual relationship and John Phillips had confided in him. Mackenzie stated her goal is to free herself and to help others who may be in a similar situation. I thought it was courageous and she was visibly shaking when she confessed it to Oprah’s millions of viewers. It’s obvious the Phillips’ family was/is dysfunctional. This book can do one of two things; make the family more dysfunctional or bring them closer together. Unfortunately, it will probably divide them further.
Bobby’s Revenge
VH-1 aired Behind the Music – Bobby Brown on Thursday night. It was pinned as Bobby’s revenge for rating purposes. Outside of the information we already knew, that Bobby Brown has an ego, what was most interesting were comments by New Edition members, Ralph Tresvant, Johnny Gill and Michael Bivens about Whitney Houston. Ralph Tresvant said, “Whitney and Bobby were two peas in a pod. Everyone was blaming Bobby for bringing Whitney down when in fact they had a lot in common.” In short, they were saying she was as ghetto as Bobby was. Tell us something we didn’t already know. Don’t get it twisted. I love Whitney Houston, but I’ve often said that she has to take some of the responsibility for the demise of their relationship. As for Bobby bringing her to drugs, I never bought that because Whitney was busted for marijuana possession at an airport long before she was with Bobby Brown. In his tell-all book, which by the way flopped, Bobby Brown states that he never tried cocaine until he met Whitney. No matter who started who, they were both drugged out for most of their marriage.
In the program, Bobby stated that Whitney was raised in West Orange, New Jersey. I’m paraphrasing, but his words were something like, “It was ghetto boy meets ghetto girl.” He also said the two of them had “destructive personalities.” Ya think!!
All in all, Behind the Music Bobby Brown was pretty interesting. Bobby’s gained a ton of weight which he claims he’s going to lose. I enjoyed watching the New Edition songs and videos.
He states the low point of his life was when Video Vixen and author Karrine Steffans, aka Superhead, posted a YouTube video of him sleeping on her couch. He was homeless, had been living in his car for awhile and he ended up in her home. He said the YouTube video was one of the lowest points in his life and the catalyst for him to make life changes.
(You can move the slider to 2:02 if you’re impatient) This was pretty foul on her part, but she’s made a living on kissing and telling.
Bobby claims to now be clean and he’s excited about his new baby boy Cassius, born June 2009, with his publicist girlfriend, Alicia Etheridge. This marks baby number 5 for Bobby Brown.
He’s reunited with New Edition members, Ralph Tresvant and Johnny Gill under the name: The Heads of State. He joined the CMT reality show Gone Country where he wrote and performed a song for the finale entitled, The Man I’m Gonna Be. He dedicated the song to his new girl and his two daughters. There’s talk of a country CD release by Bobby.
It’s ironic, all of the pain that comes with fame. For Bobby Brown and Whitney Houston, I hope they work through their turbulent past together for the sake of their daughter. It’s time to move on and open new doors, which both of them appear to be doing. For Mackenzie Phillips, I hope she finds closure. No matter what anyone thinks, it’s her reality.

I enjoy reading your blog. Bobby Brown lied and contradicted his self. He said he never tried cocaine until he met Whitney Houston when he was doing drugs at an early age. He claims Whitney Houston asked him to marry her when he told the story of there engagement on that b.s. Being Bobby Brown show. said he bought her a tiny ring as a joke then gave her the rock. I agree Whitney is no saint and her image was manufactured by Clive Davis. Did anyone notice how she kept saying on the Oprah interview he won’t like this but? Whitney is still in love with Bobby Brown. The one thing I agree with Bobby is they both have destructive personalities. He all but said he didn’t feel the love from Whitney when she stayed with his sorry but after sleeping with all those women. Some people are better off apart then together.
Mckenzie Phillips been on drugs all her life. No one know what happened between them except them and God. Why would she lie? I don’t think she is. The father was sick.

I enjoy reading your blog as well and yes it was well written. I haven’t watched VH1 but I did see the Oprah interview. Whitney claims she didn’t smoke crack but when you lace mary jane with cocaine isn’t it still considered crack? So many people were pulling for Whitney and Bobby but when you knock on the devil’s door enough, one day he answers. I pray they both find happiness.
